Solids, Liquids, & Gas Experiment

Mrs. Ferreiro's picture

Oobleck by Dr. Seuss was read during reading week.  It was a great introduction for the students to learn about solids, liquids, and gases.  Miss Young planned a very fun and interactive lesson to teach the students about the three.  She filled 20 balloons with ice, 20 balloons with water, and 20 balloons with air.  We all went outside and she gave them the ice filled balloons first.  She didn't tell them what was in them, they had to estimate.  Then we cut them open and the students were faced with giant slippery ice balls.  Then the water balloons came next, and most of the students guessed that water was inside.  We cut them open and they were spraying all over the place.  We all were laughing so hard.  We went inside to explore the balloons filled with air.  The students felt the air blow on them as the balloons were cut open.  We even sang a song that helped them remember the three to the tune of BINGO.

Overall, it was a great lesson and the students had so much fun learning about solids, liquids, and gases.  We will continue to learn about these as we move into the water cycle.
