Assessment of Student Achievement
QSI
This is an individual
assessment for students, ages 7-13, that can be quickly administered
whole class and scored by teacher, telling you precisely where
the child stands in spelling competency. This assessment should
be given at the beginning of the year, the end of each trimester,
and the end of the year.
Slosson
This is an individual assessment that can be quickly administered
one on one and scored by teacher. This assessment let’s you
know what level the student is competent in reading decoding skills.
This assessment starts with pre-primary words and gets more difficult.
The student has to be able to read the word within 5-10 seconds.
Once the student has missed 5 words, that is were their level of
decoding is determined. This assessment should be given at the
beginning of the year, the end of each trimester, and the end of
the year.
Flynt & Cooter/DRA
These two are different assessments but generally assess
the same skill. They are individual assessments given one on
one that take 15-30 minutes. Silent reading comprehension,
oral reading, and listening comprehension can be assessed by
administering either the Flynt & Cooter or DRA. This assessment
should be given at the beginning of the year, the end of each
trimester, and the end of the year.
Running Record
This is an individual
assessment that can be quickly administered one on one and scored
by the teacher. This assessment should be done on a regular basis.
This assessment assists the teacher with making sure the student
is reading at an appropriate level. Running Record also helps the
teacher see what types of mistakes the student is making so the
teacher may focus on helping the student get pass them.
***All of the above assessments I have used repeatedly in the
classroom. The assessments below are ones that I have been trained
in.

This is an individual assessment that can be quickly administered
one on one. This assessment helps tell the teacher what reading
level the student is at by assessing their knowledge of site
words.
Burke Reading Interview
This is an individual assessment given one on one that takes 15-30
minutes. This gives the teacher an in depth perception of what
the student’s view, or schema, of reading is.
