HOMEWORK: Homework will be given nightly. Each student will be supplied with a homework folder that needs to be brought home and back to school daily. NIGHTLY homework will consist of spelling practice, math, any concept we may be working on, reading for 20 minutes (reading logs will be given to students that need to be signed by an adult) and occasionally any work that students were unable to finish at school. Homework should not take more than 40 minutes (including 20 minutes of reading). Please understand that there will be nights that homework is light due to the students finishing in class. ALL homework is due the following Friday (unless no school, then it is due at the end of the week). ^TOP

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT: I have found that positive reinforcement works well. It sets students up for success. Dream Dollars are a school wide reward. We will keep track of student’s Dream Dollars in class. Team points will also be used in the classroom. Each table is a team. The team that earns the most points each week will get to go to the treasure box on Friday! The way they can earn points is by being the first to clean their table off, being quiet during instruction, being good examples, etc. The class can also earn rewards for getting top scores in their specials. I have a plastic fish bowl and every time the class earns a 5 in their special, they get to put 5 cotton balls in the fish bowl. Once the bowl is filled they can earn an educational movie and popcorn. Students who misbehave will be given strikes. Three strikes and you’re out! After a student earns three strikes within a week, I will send a note home that needs to be signed and returned to me. If the behavior persists, a parent-teacher conference may be necessary. Each week the student will be able to have a clean start with no strikes. Students who earn no strikes in the week will earn a Dream Dollar. ^TOP

BIRTHDAYS: I grew up celebrating my birthday for an entire week. I understand how important they are to the students. However, instructional time is very valuable. If you would like to send treats with your child that is fine. Please send something EASY. Cutting a cake up for 18 plus students takes too much time. Treats don’t even have to be edible. Small prizes work well. For example, pencils, erasers, etc. If you would like to bring in the treats, please arrange a time with me (the end of the day works best). ^TOP

PARENT HELPERS: I would love to have parent helpers. If you have the time, I have things for you to do. It would mostly consist of helping with copying and removing and putting up bulletin boards. Please contact me before hand, so I can let the office know and I can be prepared for you. ^TOP

School Supplies: We are very fortunate to have almost everything we need to have a successful school year. However, there are just a few optional things that we could still use: ^TOP

Clorox Antibacterial Wipes
Box Tops for Education (found on Pillsbury & Betty Crocker products)
Students will receive 1 Dream Dollar for every 5 Box Tops they bring in.
Package of Wide Ruled paper (PLEASE NO SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS)

PROGRESS REPORTS: Weekly Progress Reports will be issued every Friday. They must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned on Monday. Students who return them signed on Monday will receive a Dream Dollar. ^TOP

PARENT/TEACHER COMMUNICATION: Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I understand how difficult it is to pry information from a child. I can be reached during school hours at 799-2590. Please leave a voicemail and I will return the call as soon as I can. Email is best. You can email me through this website TeachingBug.com or at rlferreiro@interact.ccsd.net. I check my email frequently. ^TOP
